here’s why vine was and will always be superior to tiktok you can’t really spread a lot of misinfo in 6 seconds you had to go viral on the strength of your humor and not on the allure of insane conspiracy theories or MRA talking points it’s why vines legacy will be shit like “back at it at krispy kreme” and not the downfall of democracy

To be clear I am not denying that vines was superior.

But if you think tiktok is the downfall of democracy you’re either not paying attention or on the WRONG side of tiktok. There are tons of people over there dedicated to making sure the masses have access to accurate information, exposing corruption, and organizing against fascism. Tiktok is not the problem. For every bad actor there’s a good one and as we like to say here at the tumblr dot com: curate your experience.

    Reading comprehension quiz (unit 2):

    1. Please summarize the argument of original post in your own words. Is the main point of the post about democracy, or something else? What other issues might the the author be trying to address?
    2. Define hyperbole. Why might the author deploy this rhetorical device here? What features of Tumblr may have encouraged this style of post?
    3. How can algorithms disincentivize or prevent users from fully controlling their experience on social media platforms such as TikTok? How might the architecture of these platforms —including longer-form video options — facilitate radicalization or fringe beliefs? (See Becker, A. (2021, August 24). if a doctor or other medical professional says something to you that sounds and feels wrong, please tell another professional about it, and ask for second, third, fourth and so on opinions. my psychiatric medications nurse told me she refused to prescribe my clonazepam/klonopin because i hadn’t been to her office since july (it’s late october), which to her meant that “i’m coping well enough to not need it.” despite having just told her that i am escaping being domestically abused physically + mentally, as well as coping with my mother passing away just recently.

what i didn’t get to tell her is the reason why i hadn’t been to her office since july is because she was rude about my clonazepam prescription that i got from a doctor in a psychiatric hospital. i was afraid she wouldn’t prescribe it to me again, because she denied prescribing it to me after i got out of the hospital for an asinine reason. the reason that time? “you shouldn’t have this, doctors ‘never’ give out prescriptions like this outside of the hospital.” this is literally a blatant lie, which was confirmed by every single other medical professional i have. the doctor in the hospital explicitly explained to me how i was going to continue taking the clonazepam once out of the hospital and on my own.

i waited it out to see if she would have a different reaction, but she confirmed my fears, and let me down. i’m going to be returning to the same psychiatric hospital where i got treated properly and put on appropriate medications for the level of crisis i’m in. the only thing that motivated me to actually take that step and take care of myself was telling my therapist about it. she confirmed to me that this is blatant mistreatment and she’s refusing to do her job.

if something your doctor says sounds and smells like bullshit, it is, and you do NOT have to put up with it. be aggressive with your care. tell professionals who pull these kinds of things how you actually feel about them, and get other professionals on your side to help you report them for malpractice and mistreatment. i will be.

for context’s sake: this is from JBVO, a show hosted by Johnny Bravo where you could call in and request your favorite episode of a CN show and Johnny would play it for you. for the most part it worked out pretty smoothly since at the time cn’s shows mostly had an average episode length of 7 to 11 minutes.

but one day a viewer requested that they play their favorite episode of dragon ball z, a show with 23-minute long episodes. due to time constraints with both dbz AND jbvo they had to work a compromise: a sped up version of the requested dbz episode played with johnny narrating over it so people understood what’s going on

If you struggle with substance abuse but not addiction, you still deserve support. If you struggle with suicidality/self harm urges but don’t act on it, you still deserve support. If you struggle with psychosis and paranoia but have insight, you still deserve support. If you struggle with anything but are “coping with it,” you still deserve support.

You dont need to be in imminent crisis to get help - safety planning, harm reduction, resources, and accommodations. You’re still struggling. You’re still suffering, You’re still at risk/in danger. You deserve better - you need better. Your health and wellbeing matters.

Giving people support when they are not in crisis is a good way to keep them out of crisis

    it was a bit of a self-own

    READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

    1. why might op have said that she wanted to choose a word with “more ‘reasonable’ mispronounciations”? what could the quotes around “reasonable” indicate? why did she say mispronunciations instead of pronounciations?
    2. op writes that the post “backfired” and now “half the people on this post think i actually pronounce it like this.” what might the word “backfired” mean in this context?
    3. what words could “self-own” sound similar to, and how could that relate to the rest of the post?

URGENT: Congress about to pass a mass censorship and surveillance bill under the guise of “protecting children”

    May 13 2023

The Senate has been in a “do something!” mode regarding children’s online safety. They’re using this as an excuse to push for widespread internet censorship and surveillance. I already spoke about the EARN IT Act, which has a slimmer chance of passing with widespread opposition and a few senators saying they won’t vote for it. The real threat is actually KOSA (s.1409), the Kid’s Online Safety Act. It does two primary things:

First, KOSA pressures platforms to install filters that would wipe the net of anything deemed “inappropriate” for minors. This means instructing platforms to censor. We saw how these filters impacted websites firsthand with tumblr in 2018, with not only blocking all adult content but also sfw queer content such as suicide hotlines, art archives, wiping out entire blogs because they had queer fandom related posts, etc. Places that already use content filters have restricted important information about suicide prevention and LGBTQ+ support groups. KOSA would spread this kind of censorship to every corner of the internet. And who gets to decide what is and isn’t harmful for minors? Oh don’t worry, just every single state attorney general and the FTC, which is appointed by the president. You know, the same attorney generals that just banned gender-affirming healthcare under the guise that it “ruins mental health” of minors. This is why the Heritage Foundation was one of the first to sponsor the bill because they can use it to censor trans content, and Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is it’s co-author.

Second, KOSA would ramp up the online surveillance of all internet users by forcing websites to use age verification and parental monitoring tools. Yup, that’s right. Now every single person who wants to access the internet has to upload their govt ID online to third party apps that get hacked all the time. You queer in a red state? You undocumented? You an activist? Have fun getting all your online activity and metadata attached to your govt ID.

Over 90+ human and LGBT rights groups agree that KOSA is dangerous and updates to the 2023 version won’t and can’t address the big problems with the bill. This bill has MASSIVE bipartisan support, and the authors Blumenthal and Blackburn (yes, that Blumenthal that’s pushing the EARN IT Act, and who also sponsored the RESTRICT Act and SOPA/PIPA if you remember) are using the tragedy of mothers who lost their kids to online harassment and young adults who’ve been traumatized online to lobby for it, and got Dove the company to use a bunch of influencers to push for this under the guise it prevents eating disorders…I wish I was lying. There are already 30 co-sponsors.

    HOW TO FIGHT KOSA

    1. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES & THE COMMERCE COMMITTEE

This is a link to the Senate Commerce Committee phone numbers and a call script to read off of. (202) 224-3121 connects you to the congressional hotline

Opposition is getting drowned, and these upcoming weeks will be heavy for lobbying and they’re using young people to do it. We NEED to show these senators that young people are actually opposed to this and don’t want it.

    2. Sign these petitions

    1. Open Letter Against KOSA
    2. Petition 1
    3. Petition 2
    4. Petition 3
    5. Petition 4
    6. Resistbot: Text PHJDYH to 50409

    3. Spread the word.

The opposition is getting absolutely drowned online. Dove has nearly 100k signatures to push for KOSA. Influencers on tiktok are pushing for this without ever having read the bill. Fucking Lizzo is sponsoring it. If you have twitter, reddit, tiktok, are in any community, SPREAD THE WORD, PLEASE.

Here is a linktree with all the above petitions for easy shargin: Link to linktree

I initially thought this could be a positive thing without seeing the stipulations attached…yikes. Protecting minors shouldn’t involve surveillance of literally everyone.

Free piece of advice for the young people: there’s a particular type of embittered adult who will tell you that adulthood is a boring, tedious slog. They like to talk about the drudgery of middle class existence, and are for some reason particularly fixated on repetitive suburban aesthetics. These people are not your friends. Being in your 30s is better than being in your 20s, and literally everything is better than being a teenager. Don’t let boring people make you dread growing up.
